I was born in Leicester in 1944 and grew up in a succession of towns in the north of England. After a degree in German at the University of Newcastle I lived in Bavaria for four years, studying at the University of Erlangen and failing to teach English to reluctant teenagers in Nürnberg.
Clearly not meant to be a teacher, I took a secretarial course on my return to England but soon married and stopped work to bring up a disabled step-daughter and two children of my own.
In 1988 I returned to employment and worked in university administration for nine years until my husband, by then early-retired, decided it was time for us to fulfil our ambition of moving out of the over-crowded south-east of England.
Since 1997 we have lived in an old farmhouse near Carlisle, where we have several large outbuildings which my husband uses as sculpture studios (see links).
I started making up stories before I was old enough to write them down, and have been writing on and off ever since. I write mainly for the 8 - 12 year age group but have also started writing and illustrating picture books for the very young.
